Learn about The Empower Project NI

Event Photography – Local charity Empower Project NI recently held an open day in Meadowland Shopping Centre Magherafelt. Families and parents were invited to come along and find out information about the charity, and also to take part in arts and crafts. I was invited to come along by Josie and capture all the fun activities taking place on the day. Thanks to Sinead from the Mums at Work Network for the referral – much appreciated.

What does the Empower Project do?

Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, the Empower Project supports families with children on the spectrum. It is a project led by a community organisation called DADS (Dyslexia, Autism, Dyspraxia Support) that has been operating for over 25 years. DADS was originally set up as a self-help group for parents who have children with learning difficulties.

The project targeted 4 groups where parents, the wider family circle, and professionals were offered helped and support. This included information sessions, training sessions, parent and professional conferences plus activities for the children and siblings. There was also the opportunity for parents and professionals to achieve a CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism.

Since 2015 11,000 participants have engaged in Empower Activities

There were lots of fun activities taking place on the day including cookie and cupcake decorating. The children were having great craic when I was there and it was lovely meeting everyone and hearing their story
